The city edit Issue 01
The Wells Pilates Edit
England's smallest cathedral city has a correspondingly intimate Pilates scene: two independent equipment studios, very different teaching formats and enough good architecture around them to make the class the beginning of the day.
The long read
Pilates in Wells, neighbourhood by neighbourhood.
Deeper Balance is the broader studio offer. Its bright South Horrington room runs three-person equipment sessions using reformer, Wunda Chair, CoreAlign and springboard, alongside private work and a wider timetable of mat Pilates, yoga and qigong. The Pilates Room Wells is the private alternative: one-to-one apparatus sessions from a quiet Ash Grove studio, tailored around injury, stiffness and long-term strength.
The prices explain the distinction. Deeper Balance publishes open-studio equipment sessions at £20 and teacher-dependent private rates from £42; The Pilates Room charges £58 for a single private lesson, falling to £50 per session in a block of ten. Neither is a high-volume reformer boutique, and that is precisely the useful point of the edit.
For a city day, keep the second half compact. Wells Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace sit within the same extraordinary medieval core, with the moat walk and market square supplying a natural cooldown. South Horrington is a short drive north-east rather than part of that walkable centre, so allow for the geography when choosing a class.
Wells works best for people who want close instruction and classical equipment rather than loud choreography. Compare the three-person studio format with a fully private programme, then choose the relationship you are likely to sustain after the novelty of the first visit has passed.
